About Our Club
In 1936 the Bainbridge Garden Club was started as a spin off of the Bainbridge Island Community club. 45 women and 5 men joined that first meeting. Their mission statement was to beautify the island. We will be celebrating our 78th anniversary in 2014. The Bainbridge Island Garden Club meets every second Monday of the months from September to June.
“Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.” – Pauline R. Kezer
This quote so aptly describes our Garden Club as it starts its 78th year. We’ve been fortunate to have great continuity and “roots” all these years in the form of our honorary members, who have been part of the Club for over 25 years, and also our many other dedicated members. I’m sure there have been many changes over the years, and it looks like our new year will be no exception.
Someone once said,
“After you’ve done a thing the same way for two years, look it over carefully. After five years, look at it with suspicion. And after ten years, throw it away and start all over.” – Alfred Edward Perlman
Well, I don’t think we want to start all over! But most of us agree we are due for some adjustments in order to meet the evolving needs of our members. Doing so will help us “stretch and grow” as we attract new members and redefine our current goals.
Our emphasis this year will be on our common love – gardening. More of our field trips, workshops and speakers will be directly related to gardening. We will also take a good look at our other “branches” – floral design, civic service, flower shows etc. – to match our level of involvement with our resources and desires.
It will be a challenging year, but also an exciting one. As your Co-Presidents, Mary Lou Teske and I look forward to working with all of you as we reach for “new heights” and make our Club what you want it to be. Growing with good friends and gardening. What could be better!
